Pornography & Crime
Americans for Decency was one of the first organizations to ask that pornography be removed from prisons and prisoners’ cells.  We contacted Sheriff Arpaio and challenged him to remove porn from the prisons. Sheriff Arpaio in Maricopa County, Arizona, was one of the first to take a stand regarding this issue.

Today entire countries are accepting this idea as being valuable to the rehabilitation of inmates.  The Swedish Parliament on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 concluded the debate as to whether prisoners should be allowed access to certain material such as pornography.

Currently correctional facilities in Sweden have little power deciding what material inmates read.   On April 1st, they will be given the power to stop pornographic material they deem as non-beneficial for the prisoner in regard to the treatment they undergo.

Summing up the stance a spokesperson from the Christian Democrat party said:  For the duration of a prison sentence the person is under rehabilitation; and it is not reasonable to think a prisoner serving time for sexual crimes would then be allowed access to porn.

Strong opposition to the proposal came from the Social Democrats who do not believe the new system is of use and they believe goes against fundamental rights.
